  • From Just "5 Years" to Becoming a Vital Social Program

The Medicare program, a vital component of the United States' healthcare system, was conceived under the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The program was signed into law on July 30, 1965, as an amendment to the Social Security Act. Its primary objective was to provide health insurance coverage to Americans aged 65 and older, ensuring that they had access to affordable medical care. Private health insurers were hesitant to ensure older populations and few resources existed outside of traditional employer insurance coverage. Initially, the program was expected to provide healthcare benefits for a period of five years, starting in 1966. However, it quickly became evident that the program was essential and necessary, and therefore its tenure was extended indefinitely. The original Medicare program, known as Medicare Part A, covered hospital care, while Medicare Part B was added in 1966 to cover medical services and doctor visits. When Medicare was first implemented, approximately 19 million people enrolled in the program. This number gradually increased as the population aged and the program gained more recognition. Today, Medicare has become one of the largest healthcare programs in the country, serving as a vital lifeline for millions of Americans. As of the most recent data, the present enrollment in Medicare exceeds 62 million beneficiaries, including individuals aged 65 and older as well as those with qualifying disabilities. Medicare has undergone several changes and expansions in recent years to enhance its coverage and address evolving healthcare needs. It continues to play a significant role in providing accessible healthcare services to the elderly and disabled population in the US. Learn more about the history of Medicare here on CMS.gov.

  • Turning 65 in the Next 6-9 Months?

Choosing between “Original Medicare with a Supplement & PDP” and “Medicare Advantage” is an important decision and it’s wise to do your research at least a few months before turning 65! Medicare plan selection can be confusing. “Original Medicare” is now a collection of Part A & Part B, with an add-on Medicare “Supplement” Plan (also lettered as F, G or similar), and an add-on Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) which can be combined to create a comprehensive, predictable, affordable, and best-in-class long-term solution for you and for what may likely be your ‘permanent’ health insurance plan. Importantly, this Medicare Supplement / Medigap path ‘eliminates’ provider networks, most pre-approvals and referrals, possible ‘step care’ and has a low annual health care deductible. Plus, Medicare Supplement / Medigap path offers same coverage nationwide and allows you to seek out specialists and facilities anywhere in the US — want to see a specialist at Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic or a “leading specialist in Denver” you’ve read about — it’s all included for the tradeoff of a modest monthly premium in most cases. However, you have just an opportunity or two to utilize a Medicare Supplement before that door closes to most new enrollees to Medicare. Your alternative Medicare health coverage path is called "Medicare Advantage"-- the plan type promoted in the Joe Namath and JJ Walker television commercials is essentially a privatized packaged version of care meeting minimum requirements set by CMS* and fully provisioned by private insurance carriers who can impose restrictions including networks of health providers, pre-approval requirements, referral requirements, step-care or partial care determined by the insurance company (sometimes in contrast your doctor), and higher annual maximum out of pocket expenses (MooP) per year (MoosP is up to $8300 in 2023). Medicare Advantage plans can pay a higher 'commission' to the agents (or telemarketers) that will call you relentlessly once you "Call Now" sharing your phone number, so be careful. If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan it "may" be possible to transition over to a Medicare Supplement. Give us a call to learn more about possibly moving from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare + Supplement/PDP. In the meantime, it's important to know that Vital Coverage Group, LLC's information, advice and help with enrollment is free to all Medicare enrollees (in our license states) when they turn 65 (or shift plans later if they qualify) as Medicare allows licensed insurance agents and agencies to earn a modest fee to assist you and others with these important decisions. So be sure to rely on an independent licensed professional -- not a TV commercial -- for your questions and enrollment of your vital Medicare coverage. We almost exclusively present Original Medicare-based plans and can help find the best fit for your situation and lifestyle. Nearing age 65? Get ready to be called multiple times every day by telemarketers trying to sell you Medicare Advantage plans promising "zero cost", free groceries, a free "dental plan" and more. Of course, nothing is really "free" so ask us to share coverage differences across plans to ensure your best fit. Life happens, health happens, be ready.
